Xenical

Xenical (orlistat) is lipase inhibitor. It acts in gut to inhibit pancreatic lipase, essential for triglyceride digestion and absorption. It is a FDA approved drug for blocking fat formation. The difference between Xenical and other aforementioned weight loss drugs is that it is used for long term treatment of obesity while others are used for short term treatment. It is marketed by Roche Holding AG of Switzerland worldwide.

Xenical Use

For effective use of Xenical to reduce obesity you should follow the directions given by your doctor. This drug alone cannot solve the problem of obesity. So, the intake of this drug must be in addition to controlled diet regime and exercises.

How Xenical works

Xenical works in the digestive system and stops one-third of fat in your food from being digested. When it is taken with meals it attaches to lipases and stops them from breaking down the fats. And as the undigested fat cannot be absorbed by your body it is excreted through bowel movements.

How to take

You should take one 120mg capsule of Xenical orally with liquid during each main meal which contains fat. You can take it up to three times a day simultaneously with low-calorie diet and physical exercises.

Precautions

Xenical should not be taken if you have reduced bile flow, food absorption problems, pregnant, nursing etc. Tell your doctor whether you have allergy, heart ailments or diabetes before taking the drug.

Side effects

As Xenical works by stopping absorption of fat by your body it is very much likely that you might experience changes in bowel movement. It may be also possible that you experience gas with oily discharge. You may also experience short term side effects like – swelling of lips, tongue or face and difficulty in taking breath. If any of these side effects does seem to arise do not forget to consult your doctor.

Missed dose of Xenical
